Down Home Days ... They bring a new sense of peace and quiet to this busy and fast paced world that we live in these days. Nestled in the sleepy little town of Chickamauga, GA we can find such a thing as "the slow life." The last part of April and the first part of May are filled with events that showcase how life just 20 to 30 years ago was far more different from what life is like now.Downtown Chickamauga still has all of the history it had the day the Civil War ended. Since there was a battle and a lot of major generals of the Civil War were there and had headquarters there. Still you can find the mansions and remnants of what was left. The streets are blocked off from cars and there is a multitude of horse and buggies along with the occasional tractors here and there. Stores are closed and have stands out front making food the way they would have made it without electricity. My all time favorite is the infamous Funnel Cake made the real way, with as much grease and dough as possible. The smell of kettle corn and homemade ice cream, along with ribs and beef permeate the air.
Along the streets every type of music from that time period is represented. From blue-grass to backwoods country music, you heard it all. It reminded me of listening to my great-grandfather listening to his radio and hearing some of the best music ever. It brought me back to my childhood. Since I grew up in a small town, there was no computer and I didn't lay my eyes on one until I was thirteen, when I moved to a bigger city. The closest style to rock music was jazz, but even it had a country accent to it.
Of course being in this type of crowd you experience the country twang of Georgians and no matter where you are from, they show the best hospitality. One of the ladies who gave me free food said, "We have to put our best foot forward for the visitors. If we don't then no one would ever come back to our little town."
