The first year of college can be a trying time in a young person's life. Many people expect to head off to college and it be just like high school. The truth is college is quite different from high school. Not only do you have more freedom, but you have a lot more responsibility as well. Part of that responsibility is turning in assignments on time and making sure they are properly done. In order to do this, you must have the proper school supplies on hand.

Top Ten Must Have School Supplies for College #1: Planner

A planner is a must have addition to your school supplies list because it will help to keep you on track. In college it's easy to get behind, especially when you work. In order to make sure you get everything done on time, you need a planner.

A graphing calculator is a must have for your school supplies list, because it will be needed for several important courses. Not only will you use a graphing calculator for math courses, but you will also need it for many science courses as well.

A laptop is a must have for your school supplies list especially if you plan on attending college in another state. If you plan on staying in a dorm room, you will be able to use your laptop not only for assignments, but emailing family and friends as well. A laptop will truly become your best friend as you use it to watch DVDs, do research, and even earn money.

I'd actually recommend a decent ballpoint pen. Gel pens are great, but often wind up smearing, blobbing up, and tend to blow up more easily, plus they're more expensive.

What a difference 15 years makes. I can remember typing a paper in the computer lab and saving it on a (gasp) black floppy disk! Yikes. Good reminder for parents that college isn't what it was when they went!

Your list is pretty comprehensive. I've got a nephew getting ready to start college in the fall. I think I'll forward your article to him.
