There are many different ways you can preserve your family's memories. Some, such as scrapbooking and writing a family history, are creative and bring with them a sense of pride in your accomplishment. Others, such as transferring your old home movies to DVD or recording special events with a video camera, are a smart way to make sure the family memories are around for future generations. Which ones are right for you will depend on what form those family memories are in to begin with.

Scrapbooking has really taken off the last five years and has become one of the most popular hobbies. However, it's not simply throwing a bunch of photos into an album and calling it a day. Scrapbooking is more of an art form, a way to showcase your photographs by designing the album pages in an attractive manner. Paper selection, photo matting, writing, stickers and other embellishments can all give depth to your collection of family photographs and create a lovely keepsake.

If one of your relatives has some creative writing experience, then a great way to preserve your family's memories is to have them to pen a family history. Have them interview all of your family members, starting with the oldest and continuing on down to the younger generation. You might be surprised at some of the fascinating stories your grandparents have to tell, that no one ever thought to ask them about. It's important to get all of these stories down for future generations who won't know the people involved. If your clan doesn't have anyone who wants to write a family history, there is always the option of hiring a professional writer to do it for you. It's likely to be fairly costly; however, you may decide that having your family history in written form is well worth the expense.
