Levoxyl as a Thyroid Replacement
Levoxyl is prescribed to patients that have hypothyroidism, thyroid deficiency, or no thyroid at all due to surgery. Levoxyl is a synthetic form of the hormone that is produced by a normally functioning thyroid. This medication can be used as a way to treat certain thyroid conditions, as well as a way to manage thyroid cancer. Though it can not be used as a preventative medication, Levoxyl is used my thousands of people world wide. Even though Levoxyl is a well known prescription drug, there are still a lot of questions swirling around its use.
One of the most common questions that people have is when they should take their dose of Levoxyl. Doctors recommend that you take your pill in the morning, and at least 30 to 60 minutes before you eat. By taking your Levoxyl at the same time every day, you will be able to get on a set schedule which will help your doctor follow your progress.
On a similar note, circumstances do arise where you will miss a dose. Even though missing a dose should be avoided at all costs, it is nothing to stress out over. If you remember quickly enough, take the dose right away. But if it is almost time for your next dose, just wait around and take that one. Also, there is no benefit of doubling your dosage, and this should never be done.
If you are in a hurry to see results you may have to wait around a little bit longer than you want. Levoxyl is a slow-acting hormone, and it may take several weeks before you can see an actual improvement in your condition. If you take your dose as prescribed by your doctor you will see results soon enough.
At this time, there are no known side effects of Levoxyl. You may experience some side effects that come along with hypothyroidism, but these have nothing to do with your daily dose of Levoxyl. Your doctor should be able to supply you with more information on controlling these side effects.
Levoxyl is an FDA approved drug, and has been since May of 2001.
