With a claim like that, you would think that Pawleys Island would be filled with high rise condos and sprawling beach resorts, but as a matter of fact, it is the last one in the grand strand to be developed. There may be some ring of truth though to this claim. It has been said that wealthy planters of early South Carolina residing north to Pawleys Island went to the island with their families to escape the summer heat and the infection of Malaria.

They built some cottages in the area as their summer homes and some of them are still standing. This is what is called the historic district today and is one of the must see attractions of those who go there for summer vacation.

Being a part of the tourism rich Grand Strand, Pawleys Island has its fair share of summer vacationers. With fine sanded beach stretching out to miles and miles of beautiful landscape, Pawleys Island has clear blue waters that beckon all those who come near it.

It is a unique location which truly offers a wonderful experience that can and should be shared with family and friends. Its beaches are its top drawers and there are numerous things to do. Aside from just relaxing and watch the beach combers at play, you can also join in on some of the fun. Take a dip and cool off or maybe do some jet skiing and wind surfing.

If you're more adventurous, you can join some chartered boats and discover the marine life through snorkeling and scuba diving. A lot of avid fisherman has also spent some time fishing the area.

But that's not all. The Grand Strand is also known for its golfing community. It has one of the biggest concentrations of world class golf courses played in by some of the most famous and well known professional golfers. Take your pick from the numerous courses and have your round for the day.

You can also do some rounds in visiting museums and other places of interest. There are museums nearby which could help you get a better understanding of the history of the area. State parks are also just within easy reach, you can go there for some nature walks and some hiking and biking.
