Among the US population, the calls for a troop withdrawal from Iraq grow steadily stronger. However, I rarely hear among those calls a strategy to address the devastation brought upon the people of Iraq by the US invasion. In a culture where responsibility and accountability are perpetual buzzwords, the failure of our society as a whole to address the needs of the people whose lives we've destroyed is worthy of comment. An ongoing conversation with a dear friend who supports the notion of an immediate withdrawal prompted the following analogy.

Across town from Mr. Jones there is a home that sits on a wealthy estate. The father of the home controls his family (his second wife and six kids) with an iron fist. Three of the kids are the wife's from a previous marriage and they don't get along very well with their half siblings. They grumble all the time about how the father treats them, but they eat well, their home is well cared for, and things could be much worse. Due to the father's rule, things stay relatively calm at home and on the estate.

Mr. Jones doesn't like the way the father across town raises his kids, because he doesn't raise them like Mr. Jones raises his. Mr. Jones also resents the fact that the man across town has a wealthy estate that affects his own estate. Mr. Jones thinks something should be done about the way the dad runs his estate and treats his kids. Years ago, Mr. Jones' dad, Mr. Jones Sr., had felt the same way about the wealthy man across town and started a fight with the man, and Mr. Jones Sr. claimed to have won the fight. However, that fight didn't change the way the man across town ran his home or his estate.

Takeaways
  • Among the cries for troop withdrawal, there are few to assist the Iraqi people.
  • It's not about responsibility; it's about saving our own skins.
  • Mother taught me to clean up my messes.

Deez: do you realize that the reason we started the war was because Iraq was switching to the Euro which would have hurt the US in world economy? Men that suddenly lost their jobs due to our invasion of their country, had to take sides and that is how Iraq's "civil war" started.

A year ago an Iraqi woman blogged about how the Iraqi people just wished the USA would get the heck out of their country, because, as shown in your analogy, things were fine there until we showed up killing innocent men, women and children. Bush, Cheney and the rest should go over there with medicine, band aids and everything else and start nursing and doctoring those that their actions have harmed. Maybe someone should take a vote among the Iraqi citizens and ask for their opinion on the matter.

Nope, your friends shouldn't have to clean up your mess, but if they helped you make the mess they should help you clean up.

Shamontiel, Actually the analogy wasn't the best because I blurred the lines between Bush and the US as a whole. We can always blame Bush, but without a whole lot of cooperation from a lot of people US troops wouldn't be in Iraq. The troops are there representing the US, not Bush, and it would be great if we brought the troops home and worked with some of the other Arab countries to do whatever could be done about resolving the current situation.

No way should we continue to try to help this country indefinitely. If they want to better themselves, they will. If they want to continue to kill each other, they'll do this, too. When we withdraw, we'll be accused of abandoning the people who have come to expect so much of us. We'll leave them to defend themselves which hasn't been any defense in the past. Nothing we've done has changed man's inhumanity toward others. Shame on us for thinking we could make a difference. We gave the GOOD hope and will now take it away.

Man, I meant to say "Bush." Typos. Too bad you can't edit your own comments.

Bravo! I love it! We finally agree on something. Buth had no business carrying his ass over to Iraq and now that he's there, HE should have to clean it up monetarily. But, on the other hand, I do not believe that the soldiers should have to suffer for his stubborn behavior. You did say that your mother told you to clean up your own mess, but is it fair when she says your friend should clean up YOUR mess too, just because he/she is YOUR friend. That's guilty by association. I don't think half the soldiers would've voluntarily went if they'd known what they had to deal with. Bush needs to stop hiding behind his wealth and actually do something himself. Damn, I miss the Clinton days.

Gayle, "The other home is cleaner?" What news are you watching? But then, often those who support a particular position don't really care much about facts. Iraq is a total mess, and while the people over there car bombing there own neighborhoods are in great part responsible, I don't believe utter carnage existed there before the US went in. Strong man indeed! Bush is a whiny, not very bright, bully who didn't mind sacrificing many lives to gain an inside track on Iraq's oil. Yep, it backfired in his face, and now he can't figure out how to get out. No Deez, I wouldn't like the US to stay in Iraq indefinitely. But I would like to see some calls to put a plan in place to rectify the unbelievable chaos we unleashed there along with all the cries to "just get out."

Isn't it true the man across town was found guilty of attrocities so cruel, his own family sentenced him to death? Sadly. between Jones Sr and Jr, our family endured "Mr Smith" who allowed anyone who wanted, to hurt our family, while He made our USA a joke to the world. Thankfully, Jones Jr is a strong man who doesn't compromise our family. I'll bandage his broken arm while thanking him for my family's safety. He is not a man to walk away from adversity. The other home is already cleaner than when we arrived to help.
