Anybody who has done any banking, especially after the Check 21 legislation went through, probably have experienced bank fees that are a tad excessive. Bounced check fees (Key Bank, which so far is my bank charges $38) and Automated Teller Machines ($4 and Key only has ATM machines in their branch offices) net banks billions of dollars every year by charging these fees and delibertly target those least likely to afford it or those who consistently have a low balance. By the end of 2006, banks were expected to yield a record $53.1 billion in these fees alone. According to a Nov. 19, 2006 article in USA Today, eight of the nation's 10 banks, Citigroup, Bank of America, Chase, Wachovia, Wells Fargo, HSBC, U.S. Bank and Key Bank (although not named) pay checks that arrive on the same day from the largest to smallest dollar amount and will do the same for electronic transactions.
