Even as computer technologies continue to develop and encourage electronic communications, handwriting continues to play a major role in taking notes, writing letters, and even leaving memos. As the yellow wooden pencils of years ago gradually disappeared in wake of the rise in popularity of mechanical pencils, the Pentech Liquid Graphite pencil balances convention and technology in its classic, hexagonal wooden pencil that "Never needs to be Sharpened." However, does the Pentech Liquid Graphite pencil out-perform its Paper Mate Mirado Classic wooden pencil counterpart?

Classic wooden pencils are identifiable symbols of education systems throughout the world. From learning how to write in grammar school to writing memos, taking notes, and even composing music throughout life, handwriting would be difficult without the perfect pencil. While pens and markers may serve the same purpose, only pencils can offer the silvery writing texture and ability to consistently erase work. The Paper Mate Mirado Classic offers a casing made of incensed cedar wood, providing an old-fashioned scent during the quick and easy sharpening processes.

Likewise, the Paper Mate Mirado Classic rubber eraser is soft enough to ensure paper rarely tears while removing pencil marks. With its ceramic waxed lead, writing becomes a smooth, enjoyable experience. In addition, the waxed lead makes accidentally breaking the lead more difficult. Like most wooden pencils, the Paper Mate Mirado Classic pencil combines ageless pencil technology with modern manufacturing techniques to provide a timeless, reliable resource for all one's writing needs.

However, along with the popularity of mechanical pencils comes the Pentech Liquid Graphite pencil. With its wooden appearance, the pencil looks like any other wooden pencil, except for the prominent phrase "Never needs to be sharpened" engraved on its side. When used, the Pentech Liquid Graphite pencil produces a thin, sharp, and darker color lead stream than normal graphite pencil leads.

Those pencils are poppin yo. They write so easy and they hae such a pleasant aroma!!! I'm so glad God created them! I definatly am going to use this for the rest of my life. I grew up with fountain pens; I really admire the way writing has evolved!

These pencils were a God send for my 4th Grader. He cannot bear the sound a pencil makes to the point of covering his ears when someone is using a pencil near him. Yes, I know, a little OCD'ish, but he's mine and I love him. Anyway, he had been using a Papermate Erasermate since kindergarten, and this year we found the liquid graphite. Only problem was his teacher tried to say it was a pen and he could not use it. We went to the principal due to the fact that there is no written rule against using them, and now he is allowed. We are very satisfied with the pencil, as it erases clean, unlike the Erasermate. I prefer the Mirado Black Warrior, but for my son to find a pencil that he can use comfortably, I am happy. No problems with the quality of writing, it is simply a fine point.

I just purchased the trio. I love it! They are very smooth against the paper, I like the feel alot, it sort of glides like a pen. However, I agree with Eudora the lines are somewhat broken, but doesn't bother me in the least. I'm using them for my math class, and the thought of not having to break my concentration to go sharpen is great. I also used to use mechanical pencils, but they were a pain when the lead would break. I love this pencil!

I'd stay away from the "liquid graphite." I got a trio as well and gave it up for my pen (which I thankfully had on me) after trying to write and getting nearly no mark on the paper. Darn. They're pretty though.

Just bought myself a trio of these liquid graphite jokes. Miserable! No pleasant scratch, none of that satisfying silver friction on the page, and nothing like an unbroken line. The ink is the ghost version on cheap ballpoint...with a stutter. And $1.40 a pencil!!! Avoid.

I've tried both of these, but I got to say I am still for the good ole' smooth writing Mirado's. Well, those and Dixon's Ticonderoga's, those rock.
