Hollywood has been trying to look anywhere it can for inspiration for new movies. It will go through spurts as to which areas of the world, history, or science will influence movie making. One of the current trends in Hollywood is to look towards japan for inspiration.
Japanese moviemakers are considered to be some of the most visual moviemakers in the world. Japanese horror moviemakers will attempt to bring nightmares to life on the silver screen. They will show graphics that are sure to haunt viewers for many years.
Japanese horror movie creators will take a mixture of makeup, stop-motion-photography, and computer-generated graphics and put them into a movie. This creation incorporates many historical aspects of movie creation. This is an art form that Hollywood tries to match.
Movies such as The Ring and The Grudge have been inspired by Japanese horror movies. A very popular horror movie genre in Japan is the ghostly curse movie. In this type of movie, a ghost that was brought about by a curse haunts the main character.
Ghosts are typically shown as dirty entities. They are usually faded some from view, and are usually caked in dirt. This shows the idea that the ghost had to battle through the dirt that its casket was buried in.
This is a psychological idea that Hollywood had not considered until Japanese filmmakers pointed it out to them. This is becoming a standard, not only in Japan, but in the United States as well.
Most ghosts that are seen in movies today are very jerky, and will flash in and out of frame rapidly. This was created by Japanese horror moviemakers to symbolize that crossing between this world, and the next that a ghost has to do.
