First of all you don't have to worry about sharing any of the space. When you rent a single family home you take possession of the entire house, so you don't have anyone walking through the yard or making a lot of noise that would wake your kids up at night. When it comes to a two to four family home there are several not so good things that you will have to compete with. If the landlord lives at the property then you can pretty much forget about having any type of privacy. They usually feel since they live their they can do whatever they want and re arrange anything including your items.
In two families and four family homes you will usually have to share the yard. This means that if the yard is small you will have very little room to work with, and you will constantly have other people in your face. The bottom line is than tin two to four family homes there is a lot of noise and not a lot of privacy. The only good thing about these types of homes is that you will usually not have to worry about fighting for a parking space like you would at an apartment complex.
When it comes to a complex there is definitely a lot that you have to deal with. There is a lot of noise at complexes and you will usually end u fighting for a parking space. Of course some complexes are very nice, especially if they have assigned parking spaces. These complexes can also be very nice since most of them give you your own little patch of yard. People who live in complexes are usually a lot more respectful of your own yard space. Of course you will get one or two rude people on occasion. The bottom line is that it is very important that you take the time to weigh your options very carefully before you decide exactly where you want to live.
