We've endured years of lackluster video games being produced for mediocre consoles, with the exception of that bright star known as Playstation 2. For a long time, this was the only real choice for serious gamers, leaving Sony with a decided lead in the video game race with their competitors Microsoft and Nintendo far behind in the dust. Not so anymore: Microsoft revamped its console to come out with the cutting-edge Xbox 360, and the more family-oriented Nintendo has recently released the Wii system-which makes up for its lack of up-to-date graphics with a wider variety of games than its counterparts and a unique controller that incorporates more than just your fingers. Not to be outdone, Sony pushed out an updated version of their Playstation console with the PS3, complete with Blu-Ray compatibility. But which one is the best? The answer will lie in your personal preference and what you look for in a gaming system. To figure out what works best for you, you'll need to take a few things into account.

When deciding what kind of console is for you, price is obviously going to be one of your main concerns. Sony's Playstation 3 easily overtakes the others, with its basic package (including a 20 GB hard drive) selling for $500 in retail stores--$600 for the expanded 60 GB hard drive. Both versions include Flash slots and an integrated Wi-Fi connection. The Xbox 360 is next on the list, also being offered in two versions: a basic console for $300, and a $400 version with a 20 GB hard drive. Nintendo's Wii system is the least expensive and basic by far, with a price tag of a mere $250. If price is your deciding factor the answer is obvious, but if it's only one consideration you ay want to learn more about each system.

Takeaways
  • The PS3 plays Blu-Ray discs, but it's also the most expensive.
  • The Nintendo Wii encourages more active play.
  • The Xbox 360 can be integrated into the Windows XP Media Center.
