Mother's Day hit Miles City with a bang this year. Soon after our family had our traditional barbecue the skies opened up and Mother Nature had an explosive celebration for herself. Throughout the day the weather service had issued warnings related to severe thunderstorms but as the hours crept by our family felt the weather service was once again crying wolf. With some apprehension we started our celebration and somehow enjoyed a beautiful sunny day. We enjoyed our steaks and cold drinks outdoors and lounged in the heat for quite some time.

As we wound down the festivities the wind began to pick up and the sky began to darken and lightning bolts flashed through the heavens. We put the umbrellas away and decided to go for a car ride to watch the light show. The velocity of the wind kept increasing and the volume of rain which began as drops soon became a downpour and progressed quickly into wind-driven sheets of water and then blinding buckets mixed in with swirling leaves and small branches. Our Chevy Suburban began to swing and sway. Our little jaunt was turning into a rather frightening excursion as the severity of this storm blinded most motorists.
We slowly carefully drove home and were completely drenched by the time we got into the house. Around nine pm the power went out in various parts of the city including our block. We lit candles and an oil lamp as the wind howled, the rain pounded and the lightening flashed. Without power we were unable to keep up with the storm warnings sent by the weather service. Out side we could actually hear large branches being ripped from nearby trees.

I know it was not funny as it was happening, but that one has got to go down in your family "remember when" funniest moments books. Almost makes me long for a storm! Mother Nature does have a tendency to let us know who is truly in charge and a great reminder to count our blessings. Thanks so much for sharing.

Very cool story sir. It made me think of the olden days when i was a child living amongst the natives and a storm came and tore apart my town. I appreciate you sharing your story with us because we feel like we are one with the nature like you did. peace and love.

As a Montana native, I guess it must have been a hell of a storm. My memories of Eastern Montana weather are similar to many storms like this. It is that time of year. Next storm you should prepare for is the Bucking Horse Sale, that is if my memory serves correctly.
