Newport, Rhode Island, is known as the City-By-The-Sea, and deservingly so, with its curvy coastline and majestic cliff walks. During the summer months, the city does its seaside heritage proud by offering a selection of waterfront festivals that run the gamut from outdoor music festivals and culinary feasts to cultural fests and family fun.

Besides its breathtaking ocean vistas, Newport takes advantage of the bounty from the sea. Known for its fresh fish and award-winning seafood dishes served up by its fine restaurants, the City-By-The-Sea fittingly kicks off the summer season with the annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off. The national championship takes place on June 3 from 11am-6pm at the Newport Yachting Center, 4 Commercial Wharf. Visitors can sample clam, seafood and creative chowders from more than 30 of the nation's finest chefs and vote for the best in a number of categories. It's all-you-can eat, so be sure to come with an appetite. You'll leave a bona fide Chowda Head! Tickets are $20, children under 12 free when accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 401-846-1600 or browse www.newportfestivals.com.

Movies by the sea are in store at the Newport International Film Festival, one of America's leading regional film festivals. Films will be screened June 6-11 at the Jane Pickens Theater, 47 Bowen's Wharf. Considered a "low key Cannes," the Newport International Film Festival attracts more than 10,000 filmmakers, celebrities, journalists, and film enthusiasts of all kinds in a relaxed, intimate environment. In addition to screening new feature length narrative films, documentaries and shorts, the festival includes both international and U.S. film premieres and daily panel discussions with well-known industry professionals. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.newportfilmfestival.com/2005/default.asp, where you can also sign-up for schedule updates about the festival.
