Finding the Best Identity Theft Protection: Pre-Paid Legal Vs LifeLock Vs Zander
Product Comparison
With identity theft on a rampage more and more people are falling victim to this terrible crime. I wanted to find a service that would not only help me to monitor what is going on with my credit, but would take care of everything for me if I were to become a victim myself.I am an avid listener of the Dave Ramsey show and he always raves about how great Zander Insurance is for Identity Theft Protection. I wanted to do a bit of shopping around for myself to see
There are three major companies that offer Identity Theft protection. These are Zander Insurance, Pre-Paid Legal and Life Lock. You could also sign-up for a credit monitoring service, but they don't do much for you after you fall victim, so I wont be using them in this comparison.
Pre-Paid Legal Identity Theft Shield
It is hard to find out their exact coverage because it varies state by state. Their Identity Theft Plan starts at $12.95 per month plus a $10 enrollment fee. There services include: a free credit report and score up front and then continuous credit monitoring. So they will notify you of anything suspicious going on in your account.
Pre-Paid Legal also offer full restoration management, meaning that someone else will go through all the hassle of restoring your identity back for you. This will allow you to get things taken care of without the headaches and hassles. They will also follow up with you for 1 year after the crime to make sure everything has worked out properly.
The thing I didn't like about the Pre-Paid Legal Identity Theft Shield is the fact that there is no dependent coverage, meaning it will only cover you and not the rest of your family should anything happen to their identity. Also, if someone has already stolen your identity, it is too late to get coverage because they wont cover anything that happened before your enrollment date. They also do not reimburse you for lost wages.
