Burger King has been sued for cooking using artery-clogging trans fat. They haven't warned their customers, or even told anyone what's cooking in their kitchens. Day after day they just keep dipping that fry basket in the artery clogging trans fats. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is incensed. How dare they serve fast food, cooked fast, in grease? And no warning, tsk, tsk.

The suit filed Wed, April 16, 2007, in Washington D.C. alleged that "Consumers had no way to guard against the risk of consumer trans fats." Of course, they can guard against trans fats, stop eating fatty foods. This is another ridiculous lawsuit aimed at dictating how America eats. Well, Mama, serve me up some deep fried chicken and a couple of those cat-head biscuits slathered in butter. I don't need the Center for Science in the Public Interest looking out for me, or filing a lawsuit on my behalf.

I don't like the ignorance it implies. I don't know about other Whopper-eaters, but I have enough sense to know when I'm eating something that isn't good for my health. If I want healthy, I'll eat a salad, or a bowl of fruit. If I want trans fat, serve me up some fries, and up-size that order.

Attorney Stephen Gardner, for the CSPI, that the risks of consuming trans fat makes the products unsafe. There is no law requiring Burger King to warn consumers that they are consuming trans fat. If this ridiculous lawsuit prompts one, I recommend Northern print napkins with warnings. Pizza parlors and Dairy Queen are all going to need them. KFC has already bowed to CSPI pressure, although a federal judge did dismiss the lawsuit. For the life of me, I can't help but consider the health risks of any fried food.

I'll need warnings to post when we have meals at home. Occasionally, I can't pick fresh food from my garden, and throw together some Hamburger Helper. All that grease --- trans fat. I should buy leaner meat, but frivolous lawsuits have driven up the price of everything from food to having an ingrown toenail removed. (I digress, but this gets in my craw. It's probably stuck there by trans fat.)

Takeaways
  • Burger King has been testing healthier cooking oils.
  • CSPI faults BK for not warning consumers.
Did You Know?
Alternate idea: Rather than suing corporations who cook for lazy people, why not hold people accountable for what they stuff down their throat and how it affects their health.

I'm glad there are people out there that actually care enough about health and wellbeing and organize themselves into a public advisory/advocacy group, in order to help look out for the public interest. A large group is more powerful than one person by themselves. If parents are not being responsible or are ignorant, and allow their children to eat poison, then I think it's helpful if a public interest group steps in and makes the eatery eliminate the poison from the menu. It should really be the role of the government, to not allow these kinds of ingredients in the public food system in the first place, but we don't live in a perfect world unfortunately.

But that's where all the taste comes from! Fast food wouldn't be dangerous if everybody didn't EAT IT EVERYDAY AS A STAPLE IN THEIR MEALS. Great article.

Thanks Carol and Rosa for the comments. Rosa: I was preaching to the choir, if you know what I mean. I like it too, but it's no one's fault but my own.

Great analysis. While it's fine to pressure companies to use healthier cooking ingredients and methods, a lawsuit is ridiculous.

"Stop eating fatty food",this was what you wrote in your article and it made me laugh. I eat a lot of fast food, more than one person should. I don't blame the fast food industry for my thunder thighs or flubber butt, I think that if you are going to do something then you should live with the results. Great article and loved the humor that you had in it.
