New John Adams Dollar Coin Available Today

The New York Times reports that today (May 17th), the brand new dollar coin featuring John Adams, will be released. This dollar coin is the second coin in the one-dollar series to be released by the United States Mint. Next Tuesday there will be a special event held in Quincy, Mass., the place where John Adam's hometown is located. The special celebration will include an actor portraying John Adams, as well as the real descendants of John Adams.

The one dollar United States coin actually has a long history in the country. One of the earliest created dollar coins was the 1804 Silver Dollar. In more recent times, the United States Mint released the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. The production of this one dollar coin has been stopped. It's expected that the remaining supply will be depleted sometime through the next two years.

The U.S. Mint says the first two coins released, "The Susan B. Anthony" and "Sacagawea", were not successful. There are people who think the one dollar coin will never be a success, unless the one dollar bill is stopped from being produced. The U.S. Mint thinks a different way. This time the Mint believes they have the right marketing strategy to make this one dollar coin a success.

Edmund C. Moy, who is the director of the Mint, says the Federal Reserve put in an order for more than 190 million of the new one dollar coins. Mint officials say these numbers are right on target and this indicates that the public is using the one dollar coins. By the end of the year, the Mint will release four U.S. president coins and expects to create at least one billion of them.
