CAO Cigars are among my favorites, and they are always in my humidor. It would be an almost disgrace to run out of them, and due to their popularity, it makes sense to stock up on them in case they are sold out. The tobacco fields are recovering nicely from the Civil War in Nicaragua from years ago, and CAO is an export that has caught the cigar industry by storm. Their entire line is known for incredible flavor, and the quality control measures that they employ are second to none. That is why I figured that their Italia Edition, would continue their tradition of providing a delicious smoke.
I bought one of these in the 5X56 Ciao size, for a total of $7.00. Its price is considerably more than a lot of other cigars, but I figured it would be well worth the cost. The advertisements for the box were appealing, detailing how Cuban seeds were harvested in Italy, in the manufacturing process of these cigars. Since Cuba was known as the birthplace of premium cigars, and everything is supposed to taste better in Italy, I figured that this would be an extraordinary treat. It was a complete disappointment to learn that these cigars were anything but delicious.
I don't think my high expectations had anything to do with my experience smoking the cigar. The first puffs were horrible, and I figured that this taste would level off after smoking for awhile. It only became worse, and it was like smoking pond muck. Some have described this cigar as being Earthy, and I do agree with them on that point. It had a deplorable flavor, with harsh notes of excessive pepper that seemed to try to hide the swamp taste. In addition to this, after about halfway through the cigar, it seemed to become sickly sweet. This added another level of disgust, and it was not long before I put this cigar into the ashtray.
