Major General George Stoneman surveyed Dunlap Hill at on the crest of the rise overlooking Macon, the site of his carefully planned strategic battle. Knowing this pivotal location would give the Union forces a leg up on Sherman's victories and enable him to free prisoners being held in the cramped quarters of Andersonville and Camp Lawton, he launched his attack on a hot July day in 1864. His feeling of supreme victory was crushed when, to his utter surprise, 2,500 boys, old men and convalescing Confederate soldiers raised a counter-attack at Stoneman's temporary camp at Dunlap House where this notable skirmish sent Stoneman's defeated army to the very prison he had planned to liberate - Andersonville. Cannonball House lives in the memoirs of Macon history thanks to a stray cannonball lodged in the side of Judge Asa Holt's home, missing its intended target of the house of Confederate Treasurer William Butler Johnston during this incredible battle. A great site to visit! www.cannonballhouse.org located at 856 Mulberry Street, Macon.

I became intimately acquainted with my veteran comrades-in-arms as I viewed the white marble headstones marking the graves of over 13,000 American prisoners who died on American soil at Andersonville Prison. Humanity pitted against humanity and the thought of the desperation and starvation that took place here was almost overwhelming. Supernatural ghosts peeked around tombstones and whispered comfort as I toured the camp all the while believing in the hope and peace that now surrounded the shadowy residence. For the Civil War buff, Andersonville is a dramatic journey traversing timelines that seem like yesterday. http://www.nps.gov/ande/index.htm located 10 miles north of Americus on Route 49.
