The environment is always one of those topics that people love to hold rallies and marches for. Everyday some genius comes up with some brand new idea that 's going to save our O-Zone, stop air pollution, and maybe even end our need for the hated "foreign oil." Of all the ideas I've heard of through the years there is one that seems to never come up from the large environmental groups in the country.

People should stop buying newspapers.

It's really very simple. Don't have the newspaper delivered to your house anymore. If you walk or take the train to work listen to music or the radio instead of reading the newspaper. There are many alternatives that could be considered and plenty of reasons why they should be. Here are the top reasons why you should stop purchasing newspapers.

First reason to stop buying newspapers: The Environment

I get that many newspapers are recycled and what not. However, be honest with yourself. Imagine all the garbage that would be eliminated if millions of people just stopped buying newspapers. Then, of course, there is the energy that is used to run the machines that create the newspapers, not to mention the pollution created by these machines. There is no plus to the environment to be found in the existence of newspapers.

Second reason to stop buying newspapers: It's Old News

By the time the newspaper is printed in the morning several news stories have occurred. Chances are the story you're reading has seen some sort of update by the time you buy a paper. For example, if I had bought today's newspaper I would have learned that Jose Reyes was injured in last night's game (that's not even a guarantee since the game ended so late). However, I can read an article on Mets.com this morning that gives much more information on the health of one of my favorite players. Which story would you rather read?

Chances are that if you're reading this it is on a computer that you own. Therefore, if you want an update on what's going on in the world you can check CNN, MSNBC, or even Fox News and read stories from the AP in seconds. Why spend time flipping through the paper when all the information you want is a click away?

I subscribe only to the Sunday paper and ONLY for the coupons only. If someone knows how I can get ahold of those coupons w/o any relation to the newspaper, please send me a message and I will be unsubscribing today.

In ways I think reading the evening paper is a generational thing. My dad would read the paper every night. His dad would read the paper every night. I go online for almost all the same reasons you give. Good article!

Oops, forgot an l there. That's what I get for not reading.

Reading newspapers is one of those activities the intelectual, mature people do. So I guess this doesn't apply to me so much. Why do a bunch of boring reading when all you need to know can be learned from watching American Idol? That's my philosohpy anyway.

I'm with you, Zac. I do not buy newspapers. I read the news online. Sophie

I'm with Becky. I've gotta have the Sunday coupons. But other than that, I could live without our paper. It is so one-sided and opinionated; what's the point?

I read the news on my local newspaper website and CNN. However, there is something one misses about sitting at the table or on the couch and crusing through the newspaper.

whoops! :) tempted to use them to build a small dog house. Another marketing ploy in an effort to boost the subscription base in an industry that really is in quite a state of turmoil. Article request for Zac: did you watch Duke/JHU this weekend, or was I the only one glued to the screen?

An excellent article, as usual, Zac. But I would raise one small point, in response to the gentleman who posted that he doesn't buy newspapers even though he works for one. I write for several community weeklies which cover the happenings in a particular town (small towns here, 20,000 residents tops). When I say 'happenings', I do mean just about every happening: Mrs. Feldman on Oak Street turned 100 last week, the PAL boys' 9 and under soccer team won their local division, Susie Q. and The Big Bopper became engaged last month and plan to marry on the Concorde, should it fly again, next year. A lot of this information isn't available online on these papers' web sites - and the locals absolutely treasure every little bit of printed information on themselves and their families because the larger media outlets really don't care. If the Philadelphia Inquirer doesn't stop sending us 'complimentary' issues of their Sunday editions (which are the size of a small dog house), I will be greatly

Very good points. I use my old newspapers in the fireplace for kindling.

How will we train the puppy and line the birdcage?

But if you read online over a cup of coffee, you can go through an awful lot of keyboards, and that's not good for the environment either. :)

Well I have to have my Sunday paper for the coupon inserts, but other than that I read my news online. Great article!
