How to Change a Chevy 350 Engine Thermostat

If you've noticed your Chevy 350 engine running hotter than usual, it's important to diagnose the problem as soon as possible. A temperature above 215 degrees is too high for a Chevy 350 motor to run for any length of time without causing extra wear, but there are a few other things that
 could be causing a high temperature reading other than a faulty thermostat.

You must first check the coolant level before assuming your Chevy 350 engine thermostat is faulty. After determining the coolant container is filled with the correct amount of coolant, more the likely your Chevy 350 engine thermostat isn't working properly and requires replacement. It's really very easy to change a Chevy 350 engine thermostat yourself, and you'll save a considerable amount of time and money on a fairly simple job.

Precautionary Statement


Wear goggles or safety glasses before you change your Chevy 350 engine thermostat, and also, be sure to let the motor completely cool before attempting to change the thermostat to avoid serious burns caused by hot coolant. In addition, always drain coolant into a receptacle, and properly dispose of it.

Locating and Removing the Thermostat


Locate the thermostat beneath the water neck, which is located on top of your Chevy 350 engine. Next, drain all of the engine coolant from the hose that's connected to the water neck and the radiator. Look for a clamp on the end of the black hose that connects the water neck to the radiator. Simply loosen the clamp, and slide it down the hose toward the radiator. Be prepared for additional coolant leaking out of the hose. Once the hose is disconnected from the water neck, simply move it out of the way. It isn't necessary to disconnect it from the radiator.

if i ran the engine without letting the air bubbles out, is that ok or can it have damaged the engine? what should i do now?

Been there done that! Actually one of the very first things I did as a 15 yr old on my Pontiac Lemans 350 (medium block)yes there were medium blocks, 650 holley dbl pumper, balckjack competiton header, isky medium range cam, turbo thrush mufflers, bored at 15 over-whoops started on a trip down memory lane-god I miss that car.anyway have a geat day.
