Items That Can Help You Bed-share and Co-Sleep Closely and Comfortably

If You Don't Want to Bed-share, Consider Co-sleeping

When I was pregnant it amazed me how many people asked me what the theme for my nursery was going to be. I didn't plan of having a nursery. Another question that came up quite a bit was that people wanted to know if I wanted a crib as a gift. I didn't plan on having a crib either.

Long before I even considered having children I knew that I would bedshare. Now while I have nothing against someone who wants to have a room in there home to house all of their babies belonging, changing table with their diapers and diapering accessories, dresser with all of the
receiving blankets and clothes I wouldn't recommend for someone to have their baby sleep in a room that wasn't the room that they sleep in. Consider bedsharing, having your baby sleep in the bed with you.

An item like a bumper bed can help your baby stay in one area on the bed. This way parents can sleep better knowing exactly where the baby is. A baby will be able to sleep between mom and dad. If you don't feel comfortable with the idea of having your very small fragile infant in the bed with you or it would be unsafe, such as if one of the parents took medications or herbal remedies to help them with their sleep, then you shouldn't feel bad but keep in mind that co-sleeping is still an option.

Co-sleeping, sleeping in the same room not the same bed, is a very good thing to do when your baby is an infant and even a toddler. There are several items that can help with co-sleeping and depending on the amount of room you have will determine which will work best for you. A standard crib, cradle and bassinet would not be my first suggestion, but if that is what you plan to use keep it in your bedroom. When your baby wakes up to eat one of the conveniences of bedsharing is that you can just roll over and feed them. If you have to get up out of bed and walk over to the crib, cradle or standard bassinet you will have to pick up your baby to take either back to the bed or to a rocking chair. This will make you and your baby more awake.

I wouldn't have considered it before I had my baby, but it made the first few months easier when they wake up so often during the night. We moved her to her room when she started sleeping longer. We used a bassinet right next to the bed.

Good information. I would think co-sleeping would be hard on the little one when they get older and it is time to sleep in their own bed.

I am not really a fan of bed sharing. Personally I think that with all the changes that come along with a new baby you and your spouse need some time alone. I also feel the same way about co-sleeping. But this is very informative.
