Each age bracket we pass through brings a new set of products and gadgets that are age-appropriate. For senior citizens, age-appropriate gadgets and products are usually designed to make their lives easier and safer. The ten products and gadgets for senior citizens described in this article range in price from a couple of dollars to a couple of hundred dollars and they all are conveniently available on line.

1) Large Button Universal Remote - The Tek Partner Large Button Universal Remote solves a lot of problems for seniors trying to use their TVs, VCRs and cable boxes. This remote features an easy-to-grasp T shape, lighted keypad with large buttons and bold, easy-to-read characters. And best of all, it retains its code information when you change the batteries. Available at Active Forever.

2) Perma Ty Elastic Shoelaces - Anyone who has lost their finger mobility will appreciate these stretch elastic shoelaces. They look like regular laces but they stretch to allow you to slip your foot in and out of a shoe without having to tie or untie your laces. They come in different colors and three pair to a package from The Wright Stuff, Inc.

3) The Memory Phone - This is a great phone for senior citizens who have trouble dialing. At the top of the phone are nine 7/8" by 1" frames where you can put pictures of family or friends or print their names out in large font. All a senior citizen has to do to dial is to push the 'picture' or 'name' of the person they want to call. Below the frames the phone also has large buttons for traditional dialing. It has a hearing aid friendly hand receiver, an adjustable ringer, adjustable receiver amplification, and a red light that flashes when the phone is ringing. Circuit City Online

4) Handle Key Turner - If you know someone with limited hand strength or coordination, the key turner is a cheap but practical gift to give. It will give them the leverage they need to easily turn a key in a lock. The heavy duty key turner has a comfortable grip and the key folds into the handle when not in use. Active Forever

Great article just chock full of useful information. I like the elastic shoelaces as well. I'm not quite ready for most of these gadgets, but it won't be long . . .

Very important gadgets for the age group most overlooked by advertisers. Regarding the magnifier, I believe there are flat magnifiers using so-called Fresnel lens which can be kept in your wallet. They can be found in various sizes, from credit card to full page size. Since they're made of somewhat flexible plastic they're quite resistant to breakage.

It's kind of depressing to think about ever needing these.

Jean, these are fantastic ideas. I've seen several of them advertised (and not always for sr.s either...) I love the phone idea with the pictures. I think we have that with our cell phones now to an extent, but for different reasons. You picked 10 great ones... my mom is almost 60, not quite old, per se, but she carries a little magnifying pocket glass with her everywhere she goes for menus and things when she needs boost her glasses don't give her. Anyway, great picks!

Excellent suggestions. I could use a few of these items for myself and I'm only 36! Good job!

As someone who has a parent in this age group, I can vouch for many of these as being EXCELLENT. The large button universal remote is a must, as is the anti-scalding device. Some of these I have not heard of but I am printing out this list, for sure!

Another great item is a photo phone - you program in the number in speed dial and then each button has a place to slip in a photo of the person. We got one for my Dad so he could call the family and not have to remember phone numbers. I got it at Sharper Image.

Companies are getting smarter on this - thanks of course to the fact seniors will be dominating the market. But it's great, anything to assist their lives.

There is also a new cell phone and plan called the "Jitterbug," I believe, that has larger numbers and display and doesn't have extra features such as camera, etc.

I should get my old man the large button universal remote. My Mom would never get to watch what she wanted. Society is doing a better job to cater to the elderly of late though. I know all of the churches in our area have large-print Bible's now.
