"He shoots....He scores!!!" Many people who grew up with these words from 'Hockey Night in Canada' looked forward to the first time they'd lace up the skates and step onto the pond. Now, with more NHL teams spread through the United States than in Canada, the sport is picking up further and further South. So, whether you're 3 or 33, I have some equipment advice for the Gretzky-wannabes out there before you head out onto the ice.

What do I need?

Many people know they'll need a hockey stick and skates, but there's much more to protecting yourself in a game of hockey than just those two items.

First, you'll need a bag to carry all your gear. Any brand will do, and a used bag (as long as there are no tears or broken zippers on it) will do just as well as a brand new one. Make sure that you purchase a specific goalie gear bag if you'll be playing in net, as those are much larger to accommodate the bigger pads. Some bags have wheels on the bottom, some just have carry straps; it's basically a personal preference as to which you choose. If you want to go all out, Grit makes a "Hockey Tower" that allows plenty of room for all your gear, as well as an external mounted stick holder, vented back panel, extendable handle, wheeled bottom, and a fold out mini-carpet to put your skates on so as not to damage the blades. Personally, I still use my first bag-a $20 Easton carry bag (no wheels) with skate pockets on each end.
