Paranoid Parents or Government Goof-up?

With a class action lawsuit underway in the UK and the USA, there is a growing controversy regarding vaccinations and the increase in autism. Mercury, a known neurotoxin,  was removed from animal vaccinations in 1982 due to safety issues, yet it is still in the current supply of human vaccinations. While most new vaccines being manufactured are sans thimerosal, the government and the pharmaceutical companies who produce vaccines still claim that the amount of mercury preservative in them are harmless. A large number of families and professionals think otherwise. Take the following figures from the Department of Education(*1) of individuals with autism, ages 6-21: In my home state of Ohio, in 1992-93 school year there was an autism incidence rate of 22; in the 2000-01 school year it was 2217. The percentage increase is literally near infinite. The state with the lowest percentage increase is Massachusetts, with a 17% increase, which is still an alarming rate of increase. Another cause for worry with the MMR vaccine is that some autistic children have measles in their blood and/or intestines.(*2) Dr. Andrew Wakefield is one of the first professionals to come forward with his beliefs that MMR is contributing to the increase in autistic individuals. He has done studies that suggest that the measles reside in the gut and make their way into the blood stream. With the large amount of monetary, emotional, and physical damage that is being alleged against the pharmaceutical companies and the governments that have advocated the complete safety of vaccines, it is not a surprise that the accused are denying any connection. The government had the Centers for Disease Control(*3) perform a study of the effects thimerosal exposure levels had on the neurological development of children in 2000; after seeing the results that suggested the probability of a connection between thimerosal and developmental disorders that warrants further studying, the government didn’t actively pursue publishing the results to the public in general. I accessed the actual research result document from www.autismlawyer.com. With the possibility that the government maintained the safety of universal usage of vaccines while knowing that there was the possibility that the vaccines meant to keep citizens safe were causing lifelong neurological conditions, I see no reason to keep parents and caregivers from seeking retribution against them. I know firsthand that something is amiss with the way the families are being treated and informed by doctors and government representatives because I have experienced it myself. *1 Department of Education, www.ideadata.org/tables24th\ar_aa3.htm ; www.IDEAdata.org/tables/ar_aa2.htm ; and www.ed.gov/offices/OSERS/OSEP/Research *2 Sunday Herald, “DNA Test Links Autism to MMR”, Meg Milne and Sarah-Kate Templeton, United Kingdom, August 25, 2002 *3 Thimerosal VSD Study Phase I, Thomas Verstraeten, Robert Davis, and Frank DeStefano; February 29, 2000

No, physicians do not "blow off" parental concerns but we would like to be the ones to make a diagnosis after reviewing information. I can't think of too many professions where the professionals tell people over and over that something is wrong yet the people who do not know about it refuse to listen. This is not a matter of what you believe. It is a matter of information and who is best able to interpret the information. One story does not science make . In the same vain, just because people state that they know their child well does not mean that they know about CHILDREN. I am a physician and you may call me arrogant or paid-off by the drug industry but such accusations are untrue. My information (Evidence Based Medicine) and my conscience are my guides in every decision I make. No amount of fear-mongering and guessing or trying to get back at your family doctor for giving you shots as a kid will make any lie become a truth. The lives and safety of children are at stake an

I truly believe in the connection between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism. I also have an article on this subject on this site. You can read it here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/235419/thimerosalcontaining_vaccines_and_the.html

I hate when medical professionals blow parents' concerns off. I am sorry to hear about your struggles with your children. I often wonder what life would be like if my daughters hadn't been vaccinated. I love them very much, but they have lots of struggles and obstacles ahead of them that might have been avoidable. Thanks for sharing your comments!

Wow, what a great article. I loved your research...of course, having children on the spectrum I was fully aware of this (believing all along that vaccines are the cause). It angers me that the govt can get away with keeping these things secret. I was NEVER told about the side effects of ANY vaccine even though I asked every single time, I was told, "It's the law, the benefits outweigh the risks..." (shot was then administered without further discussion) and that was that. When I presented the side effects that my son had (seizures, possible brain damage, language delay, lack of eye contact, squeeling, uncontrollable/unexplainable crying etc) they were dismissed. When my daughter experienced very very weak muscle tone at just 4 months old (she couldn't roll over by 10 months old, couldn't sit up until 12 months old, didn't crawl until 16 months old and didn't walk until 22 months old)...again, they were dismissed. How tragic. Who wants to tell me that the benefits outweigh the risks?

i really liked your article about how some autists don't want to be cured. my son is four years old. after his 2 month old shots he began to have infantile spasm type seizures which lasted for the next 11 months. he has a host of small glitches. a slight spastic diplegia,(cerebral palsy) and some kind of serious gastro-intestinal problems,(multiple polyps in the colon), he is diagnosed as pdd/nos with features of high functioning autism...but what he is to me is precious, a challenge to be sure, but also a great joy! i don't think i want the 'cures' that have presented...he is a beautiful young child with a great deal of creativity who just happens to 'think' differently...to meet him on his terms isn't always easy, but to do so while allowing him to progress and 'be' in his own right is the providence of motherhood. we haven't bought into the vaccines since that first one...but i wonder had we if he would have been less functional, if the effect on his body might have led to a less

Laura M.- You can find MDs who don't recommend vaccinations. I found one. Of course, they are over an hour away and aren't covered under our insurance, but those are minor inconveniences for not jeopardizing my child's health. Vaccinations exist for the pharmaceutical giants to profit considerably.

True, Watermark. Unfortunately most people believe that the good outweighs the bad for everyone. I am made to feel like a negligent parent by doctors when I tell them that I am not getting any further vaccines for my daughters. I think the choice should be left to the parents/caregivers or the individual, if they are of age. Some other fun things, beside mercury, in vaccines: aluminum, fetal tissue, the possibility of infectious contaminants, and, of course, diseases!

There is no such thing as a safe vaccine, they are all filled with "foriegn matter".

Amazing what the goverment is capable of. Denials and controversy swirls around and around. Move to Canada?
