Acid Reflux Causes Choking in Newborn Babies

Ten Days After He was Born, Choked and Turned Blue

Would you know what to do if your healthy, beautiful, brand new baby was choking? Thank goodness I was a lifeguard at one point and got the training for infant back blows! Only ten days after his arrival, Mickey turned blue in his bouncer. Fortunately, I knew what to do. I
used Infant Back Blows. As soon as his airway was open he let out a horrific scream. "Thank goodness!", I thought, as I was wiping away the tears.

Acid reflux, also known as "colic," causes choking in newborns. I would like to make a distinction between the two. Acid reflux is a specific condition. "Colic" is a number of symptoms under one diagnosis. My son was labeled as both "Acid Reflux, and Colic." Acid Reflux begins about 10 days after birth. His colic symptons began about 12 days after his birth. There are few distinctions between acid and colic syptoms but one I would like to make involves choking while laying on one's back.

Mickey arrived at 7:31a.m. on July 17, 2004. It was a Saturday. He arrived with no complications. He was strong. There were no signs that he might have Acid Reflux or have symptoms associated with colic. About ten days after his birth he had his first choking incident. His infant, vibrating seat was turned on. Mickey and I were settling into a nap after our breastfeeding session. I laid on the couch, but opened my eyes once more to look at my boy. From where I lay I could only see two little red, clenched fists. Suddenly the fists were flailing around him. I jumped off the couch to see what was the matter. His head and face turned a purplish blue. I immediately assumed he was choking, put him face down on my forearm and gave an Infant Back Blow. It took three back blows to clear his airway. He couldn't breath for about 10-15 seconds.

my 3 day old baby was overfed and as a result acid reflux caused her to choke and turn blue to the point where her eyes were rolling. my husband used a nasal aspirator and suctioned her and literally saved her life. she is now almost 4 years old and has apraxia of speech and possibly auditory processing disorder. a speech therapist has taught her to somewhat talk. 2.5 oz of milk can cause alot of damage to a baby who is already full so be careful not to over feed your baby or let another person over feed your baby. slc

hello shelly- sorry to hear about the problems you're having with your baby. are you seeing anything come up when she is choking? what comes out of her mouth and what does she smell like when it happens? my son smelled very "acidy" when he refluxed- and a little like vomit. you could also check her symptoms online at emedicine websites. if you want to ask more questions, i'm here... It takes time and strength (hopefully from others around you) to heal from something as traumatic as this. We're talking about our babies here! Keep using people around you for support and don't feel like you're a burden for asking for help! Thats what people who love you are for :)

OMG. I am so glad I'm not alone. When my daughter was 1 week old she almost died on me, she was having trouble breathing/eating, and was very tired. She was life flighted and made it by the skin of her teeth. Her kidneys failed, and then she needed open heart surgery. We were in the hospital for almost 3 months. I have been parinoid she's going to dye ever since. Now she is turning blue from reflux. I'm a nutcase. She just did it a little bit ago and now I can't sleep. I'm so scared she's going to die again. I cant work, sleep, or even leave her alone. I don't know what to do. I'm glad to see there is others out there that feel the same way and I'm not just over-reacting because of what we went thru.

Tony, I was advised to take an infant CPR course, I also went to babies r us and purchased an angelcare monitor that will sound an alarm if she should stop moving/breathing for 20 seconds. I spoke to a doctor that my mom use to work for and he said if it happens again, first check to see if the infant is breathing, but her across your lap (head down stomach down) and hit her on the back several times. If the infant god forbid turns blue. Breath into her mouth (20 small puffs per minute - should see chest rise) Do this only if infant is not breathing. No chest compressions. Call for help. The monitor is a little piece of mind, best of luck to you. cindy

This evening whilst relaxing in her chair my 4 day old daughter began to turn red then purple and appeared to be choking, the onset of this took around 2 minutes completely unannounced and with out warning. Both myself and partner and daughter got a helluva fright. I checked her mouth and then turned her over and patted her back hard as I thught she was choking on something, her breathing was sharp so we headed very quickly to A and E. The nurses checked her vitals and they were fine then they also unblocked mucus from her nose like a heavy cold which had not been there until this 2 minutes of choking. After nurse and GP and Pedeatrician they suggest REflux the cause of this. Hi everyone, my 7 wks old baby girl stopped breathing yesterday due to reflux. They had her on Zantac and the hospital switched her to Prilosec. They suggest that we take an infant CPR class. I am also scared to take my eyes off her. She was asleep in my arms when she choked and then stop breathing. I put my finger in her mouth to bring her back, indeed the worst day of my life....
