Architecture has changed greatly as time has passed by. It has evolved from the Italian Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution to the twenty first century. It has changed from simple grass and mud huts to the extravagant steel and concrete skyscrapers of today. It can be said that a society's greatness can not be judged by its size but by the size and magnificence of its architecture. As time has passed, people have tried and succeeded at creating bigger and better buildings and ways to build. Great rulers of the past have tried to secure their everlasting place in history for all time by the architecture that they commissioned while in power. This can be seen especially in Alexander the Great and his Cities of Alexandria, and the Great Library of Alexandria. This also can be witnessed by viewing the Great Pyramids of Giza, commissioned by the Pharaoh Khufu. Architecture has evolved over time to create even greater wonders of the world. Architecture has developed into an elegant process involving technological enhancements and extreme budgets that could support a large family for a few lifetimes. Architecture is an ever changing field, and from start to end has had some pretty amazing effects throughout time.

A good starting place to view the evolution of architecture in the modern western world is in the Italian Renaissance. This was a time of great architecture advancements and architectural minds. Many of the most famous architects lived during this time period, and also some of the most important advancements in the realm of architecture were discovered during this specific period of time.
