In an unexpected turn of events, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), one of four U.S. Congress members participating in the Food Stamp Challenge by living on $21 for one week, has only cornmeal and whatever he can scrounge up for his last $.33 to live on for Sunday and Monday.

Late Saturday night, Representative Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) reported on his blog, "You aren't going to believe this, but all I have left is cornmeal." In a humorous twist, it wasn't a food binge that thwarted his careful rationing to make sure he had enough food until Monday. No, it was the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). As he went through security at Manchester (New Hampshire) Airport, those denizens of security deemed his peanut butter and jelly a potential safety threat and whisked it out of his travel bag. It seems the Congressman, in his haste to make his flight, inadvertently violated the 3-1-1 rule: only one 3 oz. container of liquids or 1 one-quart ziploc bag in a carry-on bag per passenger. Had he scooped his peanut butter into a one-quart baggie or placed it in check-in luggage, he wouldn't have run afoul of the rule. But he did run afoul of the rule, his food was confiscated, and he was left with cornmeal and his reserve of $.33 to get through Sunday and Monday.

Congressman Ryan has faced his loss with good humor, calling it a "Murphy's Law moment" in his blog and noting that his experience highlights the excellent job the TSA is doing protecting our nation's airports. He noted on his blog that his experience demonstrates that even members of the U.S. Congress don't get special treatment when it comes to airport security.

Meanwhile Lisa McGovern, wife of Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) reported on their blog, foodstampchallenge.typepad.com, fork whipping an egg with water to stretch it and adding cheese to create a meal her son insists "looks like barf."

Alas, I'm not sure the TSA restrictions make us safer, just more afraid and more willing to sacrifice our rights.

The cost of safety! Most US citizens I spoke to were only too willing to sacrifice personal freedom as a safeguard against terrorists boarding the plane. No more bringing one's own bottle of water to take on a plane, which means budget minded people either go thirsty or pay top dollar for it.

you know what's funny? tsa confiscated my sister's 3oz bottles of shampoo and conditioner citing that they were too large. since you can't get something back once they take it, she was stuck. what happened to the 3-1-1 policy? it's nice when the employees are too stupid to actually understand and execute the rules.

LOL that'll teach him to be more careful what he tries to take through security!

Now if only Bush would try this and realize how bad the government system sucks.

I can think of a whole list of "somebody else's shoes" situations lawmakers should be required to try.

I had no clue this was going on. Thanks for the informative article. I'm going to check this out via the links you gave. It's about time there was more attention brought to this. I have been there, done that. It wasn't fun. Try feeding a large family and paying rent and other bills with a monthly income of $800 and only $100 in foodstamps. It doesn't work. You end up borrowing money, babysitting for money, visiting every food bank you can find, and whatever else you can do to scrape up some funds. I am so glad I am not there anymore. :-)

That is hilarious, in a tragic sort of way! I've been there; I remember selling plasma so I could feed my 5-year-old son something besides beans, which he hated. I also remember government cheese, which made the best mac & cheese ever. I hope when they're done with this a nutritionist takes a look at it; you can so easily see why obesity is a problem among the very poor by looking at what they have to eat.
