Robert Comer is sentenced to die in Phoenix on Tuesday, an execution he has been fighting for nearly seven years, as reported by The Associated Press.

Comer who went on a killing spree with his girlfriend, Juneva Willis, on February 23,1987 had been camping out at Apache Lake in Phoenix, Arizona. While the two were camping, they met a man name Larry Pritchard who had been in the space next to theirs. Comer and Willis then asked Pritchard if he had wanted to have dinner and drinks with them, Pritchard accepted. A little before 9:00 pm that night, Comer shot Pritchard in the head, killing him instantly.Comer and Willis then stole all of Pritchard's belonging's and headed for their next adventure. That same night around 11:00 pm, the two came across a couple who were camping in the same campground. Richard Brough and his girlfriend were taken by surprise by Comer and Willis. The two then proceeded to steal their property. Comer than hogtied Brough to a car fender as he raped and brutalized his girlfriend right in front of him. Comer and Willis then fled the scene with the girlfriend, leaving Brough tied to the bumper. The girlfriend escaped and ran nearly 23 hours before finding any help as reported by The Arizona Department of Corrections.

Comer and Willis were apprehended the very next day. His excuse for the killings was out of revenge for when he had been in Folsom State Prison in the 1980's for rape and assault with a deadly weapon. Comer told authorities that the guards had beaten and tortured him and other inmates with cattle prods. He then stated that the incidents had turned him in a methamphetamine user when he was released, and he was bound to go back to prison,as reported by The Associated Press. Once tried, Robert Comer was convicted on January 21,1988 and sentenced to death on April 11, 1988.

I knew Robert Comer at a different time in his life. I firmly believe he had to be a victim himself of mental illness because as a young man he had an incredible heart, a passion for life, and an undying love and commitment for his friends. I was a very young teen friend of Robert, and I am devasted and sad to learn of the changes that occurred in his life. I know people may be critical of me, and I do not condone what he did, but this speaks volumes of mental illness and the need to take care of good people. Robert was a good young man, and he would have given his life for the people he cared most about even as a young man. I do not know his living daughter, but please know that your dad was an awesome man in another time in his life, and he was an incredible friend. I believe Robert is forgiven, and I believe he did accept Christ into his heart. I obviously feel for his victimes and their families. May God bless all of you. There is no value to hold hate for Robert. He ha

I do not now nor will I ever condone or be able to fathom what "Gypsy", as he called himself did, however, I will always remember Robert "Bobby" Comer. He was my cousin. He had family, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers, grandparents and a daughter that loved him.Yes I said loved him. He was wrong,he has been punished, and yes the family still loves him. You can scream foul, you can scream justice, you can scream anything you want. It changes nothing. The bottom line is: If God can send His Son to die for ALL of our sins, then forgive us. . . who are we to not be able to forgive?? I forgive Robert Charles Comer!!

While the long process from sentencing to execution can sometimes benefit the rare few who are actually found innocent after such a long time, I wish that our legal system wasn't so screwed up as to allow people to appeal sentencing for years and years. What's the point of imposing a sentence then? And this guy is ready to die for his crimes, yet he sat on deathr ow for almost 20 years. Crazy!
