The beginning of new life is a wonderful thing
It takes a man and a woman to conceive a baby
Through conception there is a combination of genetic material
This genetic material forms unique individuals
Genes that are given to infants are called DNA
Within DNA are the molecules
That act as hereditary blueprints
For an organisms development
But let's not forget our chromosomes
These threadlike structures made up of genes
Forty-six to be exact were given to human beings
Just as important as a chromosome, is the zygote
Oh no, we can not forget the zygote

As a zygote we are but 1/175 of an inch in diameter
For a zygote you see is a single cell formed at conception
By the union of forty-six chromosomes
Twenty-three from the sperm, Twenty -three from the ovum
With a genetic code for blood type being AO or BO
Only the A or B allele is expressed in blood type itself
Knowing this, we have a genotype and a phenotype
Our genotype is a total set of genes an individual inherits
Where a phenotype carries the characteristics of individuals
Our phenotype gives us our health, physical and personality traits
Behavior, our behavior develops through interactions
These are interactions between genotypes and the environment

Periods of prenatal development contain these three:
Germinal, embryonic and the fetus
Germinal period receives germ cells from mom and dad
Which attach to the uterus eight to ten days later
Embryonic period begins when the organism attaches to the uterus
This period ends at the eighth week, as all major organs have taken primitive shape
Fetus period starts at ninth months, after conception where bones begin to harden
Mother's to be might want to think about little known tricks to stimulate
Their fetus tucked away in their womb
For even a fetus is quite known
To hear sound pass through stretched walls
Of their mommies tummy

This was a college paper I was assigned to do. I did my best to do it in poetry form. My instructor loved it so much, she had me read it aloud in class and she added it to her class website.

Poem? Good points and effective in tracing a child's developement from conception thr age two, but poem may be the wrong category...prose, or essay seems a better fit. ;)
