Wow! A person can wrap up quite a lot of money when they begin investing in dollhouses, furniture and accessories. And then, the dollhouse is all but permanent, being nearly impossible for the child to carry or move around. But, there is a very inexpensive way to make a travel dollhouse that girls will love to take when they travel. Although it might not contain all the comforts of home, the dolls can "rough it" with this folding house the girl can easily carry. You'll begin making the set by finding a large piece of cardboard which will become the carrying case as well as the base for the house. The cardboard should be thick, but easy enough to fold in half. The size of the cardboard will determine how large of a house you can build.
Various things can be used to make the dollhouse itself. Wooden boxes are heavy, but can be used, cardboard boxes are perfect, and you can even use deep foil pans. You'll have to do a tiny bit of math before beginning the project, but it's easy: First, decide on the boxes or trays that you will use to make the house. You can use one large box - wooden or cardboard - and section it into rooms, or you can use several boxes (or foil pans), to make the sections. Butt these together, at one end of the cardboard piece, to see how much space you have, but don't glue them down yet.
The reason you'll have to do a little math is because the cardboard piece will need to be folded - but not quite in half. The depth of the boxes has to be taken into consideration. So, if the depth of the boxes is 6 inches, you'll fold the cardboard in half, minus three inches. Turn the cardboard piece around and make one more fold, in half, short 3 inches, once again. The reason for folding the cardboard short of the halfway mark is to allow for the depth of the boxes.
