Critics of the Black Entertainment Network may be happy to note that the Black Broadcasting Network is now being offered through Verizon FIOS. Their names are quite similar, is it
possible that their content is as well? After all BET is the only Black cable network, well, Black television network period that is still in existence after a few short years that I can think of. Is it time for someone else to have a go at the niche programming that appeals to the African-American market?
The Black Broadcasting Network is a new African-American based cable television channel that has inked a lucrative deal with Verizon FIOS that allows FIOS customers to receive their broadcasting in the Video On Demand format. The Video On Demand format has been around for around, but more and more channels that may not be able to exist otherwise on cable television are using the technology to bring a niche selection of programming to cable subscribers. It is not the same that would occur if an actual channel were to exist for subscribers, therefore essentially BBN is offering through Verizon FIOS, content that consumers can watch on their own schedule, not unlike how premium channels such as HBO and Showtime offer certain content to consumers on VOD but not the entire lineup for their core channel.
However the BBN has not stopped there; it is also offering, through a separate website, the ability for individuals to watch their on demand content on-line on the computer. It isn't clear whether or not this is only available for Verizon FIOS customers. However, you can watch 60 second previews of content, and they are pretty quick; Precious is already available for download on the service. Members pay $3.99 a month. This all sounds interesting but you are probably wondering how any of this can be differentiated from BET. Well BET has been around for more than 20 years, has been sold by its original owners to Viacom and does not offer the comprehensive lineup of independently produced content that this network does.
