Can Pit Bulls Make Loving Pets?

The American Pit Bull Terriers have gotten a lot of press about unprovoked attacks on children and people. The news always has stories about Pit bulls killing people and other small animals. Yes, that does happen with Pit bulls and also other breeds are known to attack and hurt people. The facts are most pit bulls are lovable dogs, and great companions for some owners. While the breed is not the right breed for everyone, there are more good Pit bulls than bad ones.

Pit Bulls are not the killing machines that most people think of. The fact is many pit bulls think of themselves as loyal lapdogs. The breed shows amazing love of people. While it is true they will do anything to protect the ones they love, they will love anyone who will show them attention.

The Pit Bull breeds are powerful intelligent dogs, with great determination being one of their traits. When they set out to do something, they achieve it, whether it is escaping from a fenced in yard, by climbing up a 6 foot metal fence to do it, or digging their way out from under it. Pit Bull owners must be aware of this trait to keep their pets contained. It is the responsibility of the owners to keep a pet contained.

While this is not a breed for everyone, they demand strict consistent rules set by their owners to keep them well behaved. The Owner of the dog must show at all times that they are the alpha-male, or the alpha-female. The Owner must be in control always, and the dog must know it. Dogs will always follow the Alpha owner. This breed is very intelligent, and listens to the owners very well. Experienced dog owners are able to control these dogs exceptionally well.

To raise a happy and well adjusted pit bull the dogs must never be mishandled, and must be socialized when a puppy. This is crucial not only with Pit bulls, but with any dog. If the dog is mishandled or not socialized like any other breed it may develop behavior problems.
