You may remember last week that News Corp had said that they had already deleted thousands of profiles of sex offenders but they refused to hand any info over to "proper" authorities without being required to do so by a court order. The states that were asking for the information from News Corp were: Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and New Hampshire.
Last week Connecticut's Attorney General Richard Blumenthal spoke poorly of MySpace and News Corp for refusing to hand the requested info over to the Attorney Generals of the above mentioned states. He had said that "...no subpoena is needed for MySpace to tell the attorney generals how many registered sex offenders use the site, or other information relating to possible parole violations."
Reuters said in their report that an agreement had been reached between News Corp and eight Attorney Generals to hand over all "information on convicted sex offenders found on its service."
The official word from MySpace owners is that they "always intended to provide information to law enforcement officials, but were trying to work out a legal process for handing over the information." Furthermore MySpace says that they must keep a law enforcement aspect on their end before and when they delete any profiles from the site.
No details have been released as to how the new information on the profiles that MySpace is handing over to the Attorney General Offices will be used, however it has been stated that the uses will vary for each state keeping each individual state laws in mind.
The expected time for the information to be released is not yet known.
