There's nothing more stunning than long, shiny, healthy hair! This can be achieved by choosing the right hair care products and taking a few simple steps to preserve the health of your long hair. Probably the most common problem encountered with long hair is hair breakage and split ends. When your hair reaches a certain length, it's difficult to avoid, some breakage particularly if you're color treating, perming, or using other harsh chemicals on your hair. To minimize split ends and breakage you need to develop a good program for long hair care. Here are some suggestions:
1. Learn to brush and comb your hair properly.
Never brush your hair when it's wet! this is a sure recipe for breakage. After shampooing and conditioning, separate your hair into sections and gently comb starting from the ends and working up the hair. Always use a wide toothed, wooden comb to avoid excessive stress on the hair.
2. Avoid using heat on your long hair whenever possible.
If you can, allow your hair to dry naturally. If you're in a hurry and must use a blow dryer, use it on the coolest setting for the shortest time possible. Don't use curling irons or hot rollers except on a special occasion. Heat places far too much stress on long hair.
3. Avoid hair coloring if you have super long hair.
It's hard enough to keep super long hair healthy without the added stress of chemicals. If you must color, consider using a natural henna dye or highlight your hair with a moisturizing hair color that takes your hair color up no more than 2 shades. Avoid bleach!
4. Find a hairdresser who specializes in long hair care.
Unfortunately, many hairdressers first reaction to long hair is to want to cut it off. Find a hairdresser who wants to work with your long hair to maximize it's health, not cut all off. It IS important to have long hair trimmed every eight weeks to maintain its healthy appearance. Make sure your hairdresser understands that a trim doesn't mean cutting off half of your hair.
5. Use a shampoo and conditioner appropriate for you hair type.
