On the fifth of May the cat, MOM, that came with my house, had a litter of five. She already had two kittens that are about three months old. When she has had other litters, she would have them under the house. This time it was different. She acted as if she didn't know what to do. Almost as if she was surprised by it all.

When I came back from the store, my husband said that he had found a kitten crying in the garden. He had tried to offer the kitten to the MOM and she rejected it. I went back to the store and got a newborn kitten bottle and newborn cat milk. When I got back from the store, MOM had two more. Both were alone, one in the chair on the porch and the other in the garden. Both were crying. With her rejection of all three, we took them in. But wait. The MOM looked as if she was still pregnant.

During the night of the following day she had two more and was nursing them when my husband found them. Great, that is all it took, she had to finish having the kittens, we gave the three babies back to her. MOM started nursing all five. MOM stayed with the kittens. All was going to work out. I wish this was the end of my story but I am sorry it is not.

The next four days MOM would hide the kittens. But the bottom line is that there were four dead and one crying. They were spread throughout the garden. We scooped that one up and brought it into the house. The poor thing was cold so the first thing we did was get it warm. We tried to feed him and he was hungry. He ate about an oz. of milk. He even went and made his little poop. We knew that we had saved this little guy from death. Then he just started eating less and less. It was hard to keep him warm, even when I would put him next to my skin and cover him with a blanket. What he did eat he wouldn't pass. I didn't think to weigh him after the first day but you could tell that something was wrong. There wasn't a veterinarian available. We were on our own. We were able to make him live but during the night on the sixteen he left us.

For three days we were blessed with that life. We cared for that baby with everything we had. It is just amazing that 3.83 oz. of kitten had such an impact on our lives forever.

Awe, what an effort you made. Sorry about the loss. We had a dog once who had 13 puppies. One day, I was at the kitchen sink and she dropped a dead puppy on my foot. The vet told me animals will kill the runt of the litter if they feel they can't handle all the offspring. I was devastated, like you, but had to understand the nature of animals. Our new mom thought she was doing what was best for all her kids. Sad, but she was a great mother to the rest. Best wishes.
