Each year, millions of American women struggle to find the right contraceptive method. For many, the Pill has been a viable option. In 2007, the FDA is expected to approve yet another oral contraceptive pill but, this time, the pill will be one that many women will find even more appealing.

Known as Lybrel, this oral contraceptive will provide women with an opportunity to completely say good-bye to menstrual cycles. Say good-bye to bloating, cramps and general pre-menstrual syndrome pain, both emotional and physical.

So, how does Lybrel work? Offering a synthetic combination of estrogen and progesterone, Lybrel is an oral contraceptive that is designed to be used every day of the week, offering continued and sustained hormone release, preventing ovulation and keeping the lining of the uterus thin so as to prevent pregnancy from occurring.

With Lybrel, women who suffer from significant gynecological conditions, such as endometriosis, pre-menstrual dysmorphic disorder (PMDD) and even uterine fibroids, are all ideal candidates for the use of Lybrel in controlling the complications associated with these conditions.

But, even for women who do not suffer from these complications, the use of Lybrel, to suppress ovulation and menses while allowing for a decrease in hormonal fluctuations, is a welcome concept. While the long term effects are not clearly known, many women are eagerly anticipating the release of the approval by the FDA.

As with any oral contraceptive, it is anticipated the use of Lybrel will not come without side effects. In fact, side effects most commonly seen include weight fluctuation, nausea, vomiting and increased risk for blood clots. As always, women who use Lybrel will most likely need to limit, or cease, the use of tobacco products.

Takeaways
  • Lybrel is the first birth control pill to suppress menstrual cycles indefinately
  • Lybrel is anticipated to improve gynecological conditions such as endometriosis
  • Many women eagerly await the release of Lybrel
