Mitt Romney is one of almost a dozen serious candidates for the nomination to be the Republican Party's candidate for President of the United States. As he takes his message to the people he has been charged with flip flopping on an issue that has been a bread and butter issue for Republican's in past elections. Without a firm and established record on the abortion issue and on the Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs. Wade, Romney would find it difficult to cement a coalition of voters that could bring him victory in his party's national convention. While he currently is tauting the party line, Mitt Romney and his Pro Life waffle may cause continuing raised eyebrows as the campaign continues.

Romney's Original Position on Pro Life. Regardless of what Mitt Romney presently asserts as his position on abortion and the controversial Roe v. Wade decision, looking at his personal history and his own political positioning there is plenty to suggest that the roots of his earlier, more liberal position on abortion go far back in time.

George Romney, Mitt's father, joined Nelson Rockefeller and others to form the more liberal branch of the GOP and together sought to move the Republican party social and fiscal agenda in a more liberal direction. Mitt Romney's mother was one of the earliest Republican proponents for abortion rights . A look at some of Romney's past acquaintances, the people he supported, the people he has endorsed, give witness to Mitt Romney's earlier, liberal stance with regard to the abortion issue.

Most damning of all, for some pro-life believers, are Romney's own words, including his statement that "I believe that Roe V. Wade has been the law for 20 years , that we should sustain and support it." This is not what pro-life religious conservative members of the Republican Party want to hear about someone running for the position of Republican Presidential Nominee.

Takeaways
  • Mitt Romney's position on abortion has waffled during his political life.
  • In the past he supported abortion rights, but now has determined he is pro-life.
  • Some accept this as real conversion of heart, others as political maneuvering.
