Abortion: Ethical Analysis

Utilitarian Argument for Abortion

Abortion is a sensitive topic that requires a considerable amount of understanding when addressing the ethics behind it. Abortion is defined as the termination of pregnancy thus ending the life of the embryo/fetus prematurely. My ethical justification for abortion stems from a
rule-utilitarianism standpoint. When using the rule-utilitarian consequential principle of ethics, we establish a set of general morals and rules in which we can apply to every moral question based upon our utilitarian findings. When this is applied to abortion, we can see that abortion is a completely ethical entity that provides the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest amount of people.

Since utilitarianism in general is based on the empirical evidence that supports the widespread happiness of many, it’s important to include statistical data to support one’s position. By looking at the medical and social health benefits of abortion, we can come to the conclusion that it is ethical on the basis that it spreads happiness amongst a great number of the populace. The following statistics reflect the social, physical, and emotional benefits of abortion:

• Half of all pregnancies in the U.S. each year are unintended, and about half of these are terminated by medically safe, legal abortions. In 2000, 1.31 million abortions took place, down from an estimated 1.61 million in 1990. From 1973 through 2000, more than 39 million legal abortions occurred

• Following the legalization of abortion, the largest decline in birthrates were seen among women for whom the health and social consequences of unintended childbearing are the greatest — women over 35, teenagers, and unmarried women (Levine, et al., 1999). Today, thirty percent of the abortions in the U.S. are provided to women over 35 and to teenagers

Um...why is a man writing about all the horrible things that pregnancy does to a female? The defiguartion, the nine months of torture (which actually isn't really nine months)...If you don't know what you're talking about then don't talk!

The writer makes pregnancy sound like a plague, whether wanted or not! I found this very poor in taste. I think the theories of ethics have been twisted around to come up with his own theory. While childbirth does SOMETIMES involve depression, this is a curable thing. Whereas once you've ended the life of the child inside you, it is a regret that you live with for the rest of your life. There is no getting around it! It may not appear as suddenly as PDD, however, studies have shown that it is there and that as time progresses, you grow more and more regrettful from the choice you made. As far as utilitarians are concerned (in fact most ethical theories) abortion is hard to justify or not-justify. There are too many what-ifs that have to be played out. If it's a matter of what makes everyone happy, then the answer is ADOPTION! The mother won't have to live with the regret of what she has done and one lucky couple will get to have their dreams come true.

sure, from this writer's standpoint, abortion is perfectly fine. however, he overlooks the true morality of it as well as the fact that an unborn baby is a person. in addition, the writer leaves out that many women for years regret their decision, never forgetting that they "removed" a possible son/daughter forever from the planet. i agree with "who cares", abortion is gay (or in more direct terms, just stupid)

What if you were aborted? What if your mother decided she didn't want you and that you would not have made her happy. So she decided to kill you, have you sucked out of her and basically ripped apart and stuck in a jar? I mean you didn't have the right to live unless your mother said so right? So if your mother had decided that she was not ready to have you that would have been okay? Seriously if you buy into this ignorance than you yourself are ignorant as well. You don't have to be religious to know that life is sacred. Look at your own life and tell me that it should have hung in the balance of whether or not your mother was happy she spread her legs.
