Idiocracy

Another Mike Judge Film that Deserved More Respect Than it was Given

4
Finally! I actually took the time to watch this movie! "Idiocracy" is my latest rental from Netflix, a service I get crazy about and then bored with by keeping the same damn movie for months on end. The longest I ever kept a movie was when I rented "Below" through Netflix and ended up keeping it in my possession for a good 6 months! I did get around to watching it, and it's actually pretty good. But at that point, I decided to cancel my membership since I obviously was not making good use of it. When I got back on with Netflix, I went with one at a time instead of three discs. Seemed to make more sense.

Anyway, back to "Idiocracy." It's a film by Mike Judge who brought us one of the supreme cult hits of our generation "Office Space." That was a movie that was unfortunetly mismarketed and did not get the audience it deserved until it came about through home video and Comedy Central. "Idiocracy" got an even crueller fate: it was dumped into theaters and barely seen. Everyone heard about it, and they also heard that Fox was dumping it because they had even less of an idea of how to market this than "Office Space." Plus, rumor has it that several corporations threatened lawsuits as they were shown in shall we say an unfavorable light.

A movie like that cries out for cult status from it's inception practically. You wish these corporations would have a better sense of humor about themselves, but when you kill for a profit, you do kill...or you come pretty close to it by handing over a fate that just might be worse than death.
