Eureka is an original TV show which premiered on the Sci-Fi network in July of 2006. On the surface Eureka appears to be an idyllic small town. The houses are cute, the kids are cute and the quality of life is outstanding. But access to the town is limited to those with a top secret security clearance. The town is called Eureka and it is the most planned of all planned communities. It was envisioned and created by the federal government in the aftermath of World War II. It was designed to be a home to the nation's greatest thinkers. It contains a state of the art laboratory fully staffed by geniuses. Eureka was commissioned by President Truman and the Pacific Northwest was chosen as the perfect location to house the nation's most valuable intellectual resources. The town's lab is used for a variety of experiments and some of them have gone awry causing a variety of problems for all the residents, but particularly for Sheriff Jack Carter. Carter was originally a US Marshall who stumbled upon the town after minor car trouble. Through a series of odd events, he is proclaimed Sheriff of the secretive town.
The show alludes to the fact that all of the major scientific advances of the last 50 years originated in Eureka's lab. It also mentions that global warming is an unfortunate side effect of one such advance.
Because of the isolated nature of the town, the main characters are featured very prominently in every episode.
First up is the previously mentioned Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson); he recently separated from his wife and his troublemaking daughter Zoe has taken up residence with him in Eureka. Jack is one of the few people in Eureka who is not a genius, a fact which at times is painfully obvious.
Next is Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield); she is the Pentagon's liaison with Eureka. As such she has to deal with a lot of crisis and moral dilemmas dealing with the inventions (and the inventors). She has a lot of tension with Jack and a host of problems with her son and ex-husband.
Beverly Barlow (Debrah Farentino) is a brilliant psychotherapist who knows the secrets of the whole town.
