Spoon River in Minneapolis, Minnesota: Spoons Up a Tasty Evening

Recently my husband and I dined at "Spoon River." First opened in June 2006, this natural, gourmet restaurant is located at South 2nd Street and Chicago Avenue, near the Mississippi River and the Guthrie Theatre in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The outside seating, fully equipped with umbrellas and tables, appealed to us, but the wind was a bit too strong that evening. Eager to try "Spoon River" since they offer natural, organic and local food, I was pleased to learn that the prices are reasonable and comparable to other restaurants. The relaxed, eclectic atmosphere added to the anticipation of great food.

Perusing the menu we quickly realized that making a decision would not be easy. Appetizers such as Wasabi Wisconsin Goat Cheese stuffed in Orange Blossom Apricots (Oh I'd like to have some of that now) or Greens with Fig Vinagrette & toasted Pumpkin Seeds, and Entres like Free-Range Chicken in a Red Molé Sauce with Basmati Rice and a Jicama, or Indian Spiced Potato, Sweet Pea Ravioli in a Green Thai Curry Coconut Broth gave us a hint that there must be a creative chef who had a knack for combining flavors.

We shared the Free-Range Smoked Chicken, Greek Keseri Cheese Quesadilla with a dip of Mango and Cranberry as well as a Classic Cesar Salad-a delightful mixture of greens, small Greek olives and rich feta. They were just the right size for the two of us. I ordered one of the specials, a fish with vegetables and a shrimp sauce. I didn't expect it to be a soup, but the flavors complimented each other deliciously. Surprised when his beef arrived seared rather than fully cooked, my husband hesitated. Though slightly disappointed, he finished it without trouble and we enjoyed a tangy Rhubarb Tart along with a coffee after the meal.

We watched people pass by on their way to the theatre through the large windows that extend the length of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the location refreshing. I recommend "Spoon River" with the suggestion that the wait staff give a little more information about how the food will arrive. If you're unsure, ask for more details about the menu.
