Kitchen sinks are used frequently, which makes them one of the hardest-working fixtures in your home. The standard kitchen sink is 33 by 22 inches and have two same-sized bowls that are 8 inches deep. But there are many different styles and combination of sinks to choose from.

Sinks are available in a variety of materials, colors, textures, and patterns at a wide range of price points. Costs of sinks vary based on material, size and number of basins and on color choices.

Self-rimming sinks sit on the countertop and are the easiest to install but are more likely to collect dirt at the seams. Under-mount sinks attach to the underside of the counter and stay cleaner but are more difficult to seat.

For the budget shopper stainless steel sinks are the most popular and economical. But even stainless steel sinks have a wide range of styles and prices. These sinks are easy to clean and maintain and for the most durable choose the 18/8 or 18/10 grade stainless steel. Prices of stainless steel sinks can vary from $50 to $700 or more. The price differs depending on the sink design, size and thickness (gauge) of the material.

Enameled steel sinks have an enamel coating over a steel base. The prices range from moderately priced to inexpensive - but you get what you pay for. The lower-end sinks are thin and have a finish that chips easily. The higher-end enameled steel sinks have a resin coating that is more durable and thicker.

Solid surface sinks like Corian are easy to clean and attractive. It's also relatively expensive. If you have or are installing a solid surface counter, you can get a matching solid surface sink molded right into the counter. This provides a clean and almost seamless design. Stains or scratches can usually be buffed out of this type sink.

Porcelain-coated cast iron sinks are very heavy and durable. They are available in a wide variety of colors and prices range from moderately priced to expensive. It's available for under mount, self-rimming, and tile-in installations.
