Bubonic Plague kills zoo monkey, in Denver Col.The Bubonic Plague is on the rise in Colorado. A zoo monkey was found dead after eating a squirrel that was infected with the plague. 5 squirrels and a rabbit were also found dead, at the same zoo.
On may 16 the zoo monkey was found by a zoo official
The zoo vet. sent samples of the tissue and it has been determined that the monkey died of the Bubonic Plague. Commonly know as the black plague. The zoo vet. advised the people to stay away from squirrels and rabbits. That it was a low risk situation. Very unlikely that it would spread to humans.
The department of health and environment, of Colorado said that the monkeys would be susceptible to the plague.. The other monkeys at the zoo, are being kept inside and are being given antibiotics.
This is a very interesting subject and it is very important to note that the bubonic plague is carried by the black squirrels. As well as several other diseases. The Rabbit is also known to carry cancer, as well. They don't live as long as you might expect.
The Bubonic plague is not suppose to be in this area, however as you see, there are a few reported deaths among animal who have contacted the disease.
The small deer tick also goes from animal to animal. Thus causing severe health problems, by the people that are exposed to them.
When feeding the birds, it is best to put the bird feeder up on a pole, so the squirrels and rabbits won't get to it. Remember to wash your hand good, after feeding the birds. There are many dangers when feeding the birds, Although I wouldn't want them to starve to death, however I wouldn't want to catch any more viruses than necessary.
It is also good to note that the squirrels are part of the rodent family. Squirrels and rabbits live about 10 years.
It would be impossible to get rid of all the squirrels and rabbits in this country, so use caution when handling them. They also could have rabies, which also is a deadly disease.
The Bubonic Plague killed thousands of people in an earilier century. Is it possible that it could of survived all these years, in a squirrel?
