Some students at Fort Smith, AR Southside High School are planning an "alternative prom" due to a letter from Principal Wayne Haver written on May 4 stating: "dance styles we are prohibiting at the prom are the sexually explicit styles where students simulate having sex on the dance floor. These styles include the girl backing up to the boy and basically doing a 'lap dance' against him, or the boy taking hold of the girl's hips and pulling her back against him".

"Included in those styles are: grinding, bumping, humping, hunching and other sexually explicit moves. Some even have the girl down on all fours, with the boy standing behind her".

Principal Haver said that Senior Class officers informed him of the "alternative prom", worried that it would harm the official prom, which has been planned for three years. Haver stated that sexually explicit dancing has never been allowed at Southside's proms, but wasn't an issue until now.

Tickets for the alternative prom, which one assumes will include lots of "grinding, bumping, humping and hunching", were sold on campus until the administration put a stop to it. According to school policy, students are not allowed to sell tickets to any non-school activities. Southside's prom is scheduled for 8 p.m.-midnight May 26 at the Fort Smith Convention Center, with the "alternate prom" slated for 9 p.m.-12:30 A.M. May 26, just a few blocks away in downtown Fort Smith.

If you ask me, Principal Haver is acting well within his authority to regulate such dancing and if the others students can't or won't abide by the school's rules, they are within their rights to have their own prom. It's just a shame that not all of the students can get together at the same place and time to enjoy something that only comes around once in their lives. One would think that some students could resist the urge to grind, bump, hump and hunch until later, which they will have the rest of their lives to do.

There really should be no reason that prom attendees can't go to both events. Just stop by the officially sanctioned prom for a bit, then go to the alternative prom for the rest of the evening. It is interesting that students found a place to have the alternative prom. I bet there will be many stores to tell from both venues. I enjoyed reading your article.
