Did you know that Chicago and Gary Indiana, heavily pollute, Northern Indiana, South Bend, Elkhart, Mishawaka, Goshen, and our surrounding areas? Their industry, factories and mills are polluting our air. The heavy smoke that shrouds Gary and their area breezes right over our area and dumps on us. This is why our deceptively quiet rural area in Goshen, Nappanee, Shipshewanna, and the surrounding countryside that beckons more worldly parts of the country is so heavily polluted. Not because of our own contaminants, of which I am sure we have plenty, but because of the filth of the big cities over yonder.

We are ranked one of the highest polluted areas in the country! That is why we have many residents who suffer from allergies, asthma and very high statistics of cancer. A doctor told a friend of ours that the spots in her lungs were not uncommon in our area. Isn't that reassuring to know that spots in our lungs are considered normal. Why? Because of the massive amounts of air pollution we have here. This is another reason that we have so many sufferers of emphysema, lung diseases and breast and other cancers.

If you decide that you want to move to the country where the air is fresh and pure and food is fresher. You want to think twice about moving to the slower paced picturesque countryside where the Amish live. Unfortunately it is a sham. Looks are deceiving. While I sit here and see the lush beauty of green grass and fields being prepared for planting and the gorgeous sunset, it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. My sinuses and lungs tell me different. The news of another friend being informed of breast cancer reminds me once again that it is imperative that we need to protect our planet, not just everyone else's planet but mine, and my children and grandchildren's.

Had to add to this. I was sitting next to a girl at a "slot machine" and asked if she minded if I lit up. I am, afterall a courteous smoker. She said yes she minded as she had emphasema from second hand smoke. I asked if her family smoked. "no". Did you work in a smokey environment? "no" Do you go to the boats a lot? "Since I've been disabled." Hmmm where could she have gotten the second hand smoke. Where do you live? "Gary" That wasn't from second hand smoke. The disease was from air quality.

Oh yeah. I've known this for a very long time. That's where all of the steel mills are, but unfortunately that isn't likely to change. It's a big money-making business. They do have emissions testing for vehicles in northwest IN though. That cuts down on SOME of the pollution. Too bad they don't do that here on the other side of the state. People would have to fix their cars or they'd have to get off the road. Great info!
