In Minneapolis and St. Paul there's only one place for delicious, handmade, thin-crust pizza. That's actually incredibly untrue, there are at least a dozen great places in the Twin Cities, but if you're looking for a great pizza, great pasta, and small restaurant atmosphere, Mama's Pizza on Front St and Rice St in St. Paul is the first place you should try. Open for nearly 50 years, Mama's has been serving delicious food to the North End of St. Paul with unparalleled plates of steaming mostaccioli and fresh-made pizzas for just as long. Tony, the owner can be seen in the front window of the restaurant making pizzas from fresh-made dough and chatting with customers, while the small seating space of the restaurant is bustling with two waitresses and tasty plates of food. Mama's is a family-run restaurant and many of their customers are regulars that have been coming in for decades. Others are children of regulars who've made it their own tradition. The small restaurant fills up quickly on Friday nights, so larger parties should call ahead for a reservation. Otherwise, part of Mama's charm is standing in the front lobby chatting with Tony and waiting for a table to free up. There's no formal seating system or hostess here. It's first come, first serve, and everyone observes the honor system.
