Americans have demanded faster, improved products for generations, from can openers to automobiles, so it comes as no surprise the same standards are being demanded from America's children. Children as young as two are expected to be quiet, well-behaved, intelligent robots. Self-expression and creativity are frowned upon if they cause the adult any more work or inconvenience than is absolute necessary. Classrooms are larger, with the student-teacher ratio sometimes at 30 or 40 to one. Underpaid, overworked teachers are being pulled in forty different directions at once, while in many cases expected to take the place of the parent, who are absent from the home on an almost full time basis because of work responsibilities or other obligations. Many of these children come home to empty houses, left to develop their own sense of right and wrong, their own study habits, and their own after school rituals, alone or with friends. Many of these children lack any kind of guidance and do not realize their own potential.
