New Smyrna Beach Florida is a beautiful place to live. Located within a twenty-minute drive south of Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach has retained much of its old Florida charm, without becoming over commercial in regard to large chain stores or restaurants. New Smyrna Beach got its start in the eighteen hundreds as a fishing village, with many European settlers from Greece and various countries migrating to the old Florida town. Back then, the waves would crash to the shore, but Dr. Andrew Turnbull, who wanted to turn the town into a resort type of village, was one of the first to construct a sea wall, which helped to keep New Smyrna afloat while his project came to fruition. Unfortunately for Turnbull, most of the men he overworked either died or deserted him, so his dream didn't come true, but one thing remains steadfast: as time marched on, the town developed, and became something uniquely special to Florida and its people.
The area has maintained healthy growth spurts in regard to progression, but still maintains its old town charm. There are residential districts with restored vintage homes, quaint shops in certain areas, and amazing beach access, as well as inland and beach land locations for unique scenery, shopping and excursions.
Known as an art town, New Smyrna Beach has many art galleries, workshops, professional artists and teachers of all kinds in area. The Center for the Arts holds workshops, with master artists in residence. New Smyrna Beach is also surf capitol of the world! Most people think of California or even Hawaii, but New Smyrna has some of the steadiest, consistent surf in the country, and many champion surfers have hailed from this area, and come back to this area just to hang ten. The Daytona Beach Community College even has a champion surf team.
