The Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS) is Dedicated to Assist Worldwide Conservationists
Helping Conservationists Share Data Around the Globe
Disclaimer - This article has been written with complete authorization of Ms. Lisa Pierce, the secretary for the SCGIS. Information for this article was gathered from emails and conversations with Ms. Pierce, alongOn December 5, 2009, I had the good fortune of speaking to Lisa A. Pierce, the secretary for SCGIS. At the time of our first conversation, we were both involved in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Red Balloon Challenge. Ms. Pierce was participating in the challenge, and I was writing an article on the participation of another research group--the "Balloonatics" from Huntsville, Alabama. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the Department of Defense (DOD) had released ten red balloons at undisclosed locations across the US. The idea of the project was to see how the information of the balloon locations was spread virally through the Internet.
After the winning group from MIT had been announced, I asked Ms. Pierce if I could interview her about the nonprofit organization "Society for Conservation GIS" and their work in assisting conservationists worldwide. In writing this article, hopefully, more attention shall be brought to SCGIS and their much-needed efforts in assisting the sharing of conservation data worldwide. The "Society for Conservation GIS" or SCGIS is dedicated to assist worldwide conservationists in using Geographic Information Systems. The SCGIS is an international nonprofit organization with approximately 1000+ members in over 80 countries. SCGIS membership is open to anyone seeking assistance in the achievement of conservation goals whether it be an individual who is concerned about conservation or a group effort, such as a conservation organization.
