The actress Elizabeth Mitchell portrays the beautiful scientist Dr. Juliet Burke on the hit television show "Lost." As a member of the Others who comes to live with the survivors of flight 815, Juliet is one of the most mysterious, enigmatic, characters on "Lost," which makes her a deeply complex role. Critics and fans agree that Elizabeth Mitchell has stepped up to the challenge. Read on to learn all about Elizabeth Mitchell: her life, her career, and her personal philosophy.

1. In interviews, Elizabeth Mitchell has spelled out her feelings about why it's more important to be passionate than to be "cool." She told one reporter "I know it's so 'in' to be blase, but that's not going to get you anywhere." She added "People feel good about doing things with you if you're enthusiastic. You've gotta go for it, and go for it with gusto."

2. Born in Los Angeles on March 27, 1970, Elizabeth Mitchell moved to Dallas, Texas as a young child. She was raised in Texas, and began her acting career there.

3. Although the bulk of her fame comes from TV roles on hit shows like "Lost" and "ER," Elizabeth Mitchell has enjoyed success on the silver screen as a primary player in the "Santa Clause" series, playing the part of Carol Newman, later Carol Calvin.

4. During her college years, Elizabeth Mitchell studied classical theatre in Europe, at the British American Drama Academy.

5. Elizabeth Mitchell had a breakthrough role as Linda in the 1998 HBO made for television movie "Gia," which told the tragic story of the bisexual supermodel Gia Carangi. The program starred Angelina Jolie as the model, and won lots of attention for the steamy nude scenes between Jolie and Mitchell.

6. Her husband is the actor Chris Soldevilla, who appeared in films including "Coyote Ugly," and television shows including "7th Heaven." The couple have been married since 2004, and have one son, Christopher Jr.

7. Although she has emerged unscathed from all of the action sequences on "Lost," Elizabeth Mitchell has suffered at least one substantial injury on a set: she broke her nose while filming the 2000 film "Frequency," a science fiction flick starring Dennis Quaid.
